How I Started In Solution Focused Therapy

I wouldn’t call myself an expert in Solution Focused Therapy.

However, I have spent 18 years reading and learning about solution focused therapy. And I have probably spent 4000 hours practicing Solution Focused Therapy as a therapist and coach.

Sounds like a lot?

Well, if I do the math on the conservative side and say I’ve done an average of 5 sessions per week during the last 16 years, it comes out to around 4000 hours.

Which, come to think of it is a shame, because you would think that in 15 years, I should already have the 10 thousand hours threshold mark.

Damn you, Gladwell! 😂

How I First Got Interested In Solution Focused Therapy

I was in my last year of my bachelor’s in Family Psychology and a trend among many teachers and classmates was to become an “eclectic” psychotherapist.

I believe this trend is still a thing, which simply means to use in your therapy methodology a little Freud here, a little Jung there; a little Roger’s here, a little Perl’s there.

Which, in my book it’s just being too lazy to go deep on a subject.

So, from the start I knew I wanted to go deep on a specific psychotherapy school. I just didn’t know which one. I was like a kid in a candy store.

Everything looked delicious!

I finally came upon a book on different systemic therapy theories with names like Watzlawick, Weakland and Haley.

Names that I already knew.

And finally, there it was, on the last chapter of this mysterious book.

The school from Milwaukee: The BFTC or Brief Family Therapy Center.

SFT back then was originally called Brief Family Therapy.

I read the chapter and the theory felt and sounded different.

It felt and sounded subversive.

You see, it didn’t focus on analyzing the problems to find solutions.

It focused on developing solutions without necessarily talking about the problems.

I fell in love.
